Day 1: Arrival and Easter Sunday

Firstly, our apologies for the later start to getting this blog up and running. We have been very busy and have had limited Internet access, but we already have so much to share!

We arrived in Merida very late Saturday night. Our host families got us settled in for the night before we attended a lovely Easter Sunday church service together at La Roca the next morning. After the service, we got to make new friends, eating lunch together and getting to know one another. (For the record, most of us generally agree that the tortillas are far better here than they are back home in the States.) Later that afternoon, we drove to a local mall to get some relief from the heat. Some of our number encountered, to their delight, a pet store with puppies that roam around and greet the customers.

When we returned to the church, we spent time together playing volleyball and discovered that our new friends possessed far better volleyball skills than most of us students. We then ate empanadas for dinner before heading back home around 10pm for the end of our first day.
